Do you have negative thought patterns running through your mind when it comes to money?
I’m talking things like,
“I’ve never been good with money.”
“Money doesn’t grow on trees”
“The rich get richer and the poor get poorer”
Or maybe this translates in your business to things like:
“My market won’t pay premium prices.”
“I feel bad about charging to help someone”
If any of these sound familiar and appear regularly in your words (whether out loud or in your head) then you are engaging in the damaging habit known as negative self talk.
By having these damaging thoughts on repeat, you are reinforcing the beliefs that underlie them.
Thoughts become things and what you think and believe is what becomes your reality.
Tell yourself that you’re not good with money, and you won’t be. Believe that your market won’t pay premium prices and they wont. Convince yourself that wealth is meant for everyone but you and it won’t come to you.
It’s not “the secret.” It’s a scientific fact. Known as a self-fulfilling prophecy, this kind of self-talk results in poor performance simply because we act as if it’s already true.
If you tell yourself that wealth is not meant for you or you feel guilty for charging for your services, you won’t do the things you need to do to grow your business. You won’t reach out to that client (“they’ll probably say no anyway”) or follow up that hot lead (“what’s the point they probably weren’t really interested”) or invest in your business (“I probably won’t make it back so I might as well not even try that way I won’t lose the money.”)
On the other hand , if you act and think as though you are already successful and wealthy, you’ll approach your business differently. You’ll feel more confident both in your ability and your capacity to charge higher fees to back that up. You will project that confidence to your clients. You’ll be more active in promoting your business and feel confident making any financial investments knowing that they are just that – investments which will come back to you.
Do you see what I’m saying here?
So how can you combat that negative self talk and change your financial future?
Awareness is the first step towards change. Make a point of checking yourself every time you catch yourself making negative statements either out loud or in your head.
2) Look for patterns
Once you have become aware of what negative thought patterns you have on repeat, keep a lookout for some of the most common ones that arise. For example if every time you asked for something as a child, your father replied with the phrase “money doesn’t grow on trees” and told you he “wasn’t made of money” then chances are that “there is not enough money to go round” mantra originated from there.
The next time you hear yourself saying “money doesn’t grow on trees” take some time to think of all the ways that you are provided for. Maybe, you’ve managed to save a deposit for a house, you regularly travel, or you have paid off some debt.
Then rephrase your negative self talk. Instead of money doesn’t grow on trees, rephrase to “I always have enough money for my needs”
Reframe your thinking and your self talk in this way and you will see your situation improve as your positive self talk becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.
